报告内容提要
Breast cancer is one of the most malignancies among women in the world. About 10 percent display familial pattern of distribution, however, half of them stems from germline mutations in the tumor suppressor gene BRCA1 and BRCA2. BRCA1/2 heterozygous individuals strongly predispose women to breast and ovarian cancer, with life time risk up to 85%, suggesting its role in the suppression of breast cancer. The discovery of BRCA1 and BRCA2 in early 90’s represents a milestone in breast cancer biology. It provides a means to investigate the molecular mechanisms of both inherited and sporadic breast cancer. However, the detailed mechanism underlying its tumor suppression function remains largely undefined. In this presentation, I will summarize recent progress on BRCA1 biology and its role in the repair of DNA damage. Insights will also be provided on how to target BRCA deficiency for the treatment of breast cancer.

Genze Shao, Ph.D., is a professor of Cell Biology, Peking University, School of Basic Medical Sciences. He obtained Ph. D degree in the Peking University Health Science Center. Dr Shao received his postdoctoral training at Columbia University and University of Pennsylvania during 2004-2006 and 2007-2010, respectively. His research has been mainly focused on tumor suppressor genes and their roles in tumorigenesis. Current research interest centers on DNA damage repair and cell cycle checkpoint control.
