Peking University Health Science Center Female Pelvic Floor Research Institute (PKUHSC FPFRI)

The Female Pelvic Floor Disorders Research Center of Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC FPFRI), established in November 2017, is committed to advancing the understanding of female pelvic floor disorders through multidisciplinary collaboration, with a mission to "investigate the pathogenesis of pelvic floor diseases via interdisciplinary approaches, facilitate clinical translation, and elevate the standards of diagnosis and treatment." This university-level platform integrates renowned clinical experts from multiple departments across Peking University's affiliated hospitals, including Obstetrics And Gynecology, Urology, Colorectal Surgery, Gastroenterology, Plastic Surgery, Radiology, Rehabilitation Medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. It synergizes with leading researchers from the Peking University Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, Stem Cell Research Center, Magnetic Resonance Imaging Research Center, and the Biomechanics and Materials Science Division of the College of Engineering, forming a cross-disciplinary research hub dedicated to pelvic floor disorders.

1. Investigating Pathogenesis of Pelvic Floor Disorders

Mechanistic Studies: Elucidate the anatomical and ultrastructural characteristics of pelvic floor supportive tissues.

Biomechanical Modeling: Establish biomechanical analysis frameworks for pelvic floor support systems.

Molecular Pathways: Investigate the role of mechanosensitive proteins in disease progression and therapeutic interventions.

Aging & Epigenetics: Explore age-related epigenetic regulation of pelvic floor supportive structures.

Childbirth Injury: Conduct multimodal assessment of levator ani and perineal muscle injuries during childbirth, alongside mechanistic studies on tissue repair.

Neuromuscular Dysfunction: Decipher the impact of neuromuscular junction damage on pelvic muscle atrophy.

2. Developing Pelvic Floor Disease Assessment Systems

AI-Driven Modeling: Construct 3D pelvic floor models and finite element models using MRI data integrated with deep learning algorithms.

Advanced Imaging:

Optimize high-resolution ultrasound for pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) diagnosis.

Implement high-resolution MRI for precise evaluation of perineal and vaginal muscle groups.

Develop 3D stress MRI for intelligent mesh design and dynamic assessment of pelvic-abdominal biomechanics.

3. Innovating Biomaterials & Addressing Mesh Complications

Material Engineering: Design and refine silk fibroin-based mesh with advanced surface modification technologies.

Preclinical Models: Establish large animal models of pelvic floor disorders to validate therapeutic strategies and accelerate clinical translation.

Complication Mechanisms: Investigate the pathophysiology of mesh-related complications to guide safer surgical interventions.
