General Practice Development and Research Center, Peking University Health Science Center

Organization Overview

The General Practice Development and Research Center, Peking University Health Science Center (hereinafter referred to as the General Practice Research Center) was established in 2016. The first director of the center was Professor KK Cheng, a fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Science , a professor at the University of Birmingham, UKand a visiting professor at Peking University Health Science Center. The current director is Professor Chi Chunhua, head of the Department of General Practice at Peking University First Hospital. Dong Aimei, Wang Jingtong, and Han Jiangli serve as deputy directors, and KK Cheng holds the position of honorary director.

The General Practice Research Center relies on the multidisciplinary platform and evidence-based resources of Peking University, Peking University Health Science Center, and Peking University First Hospital. It focuses on the Healthy China strategy and the needs of tiered diagnosis and treatment as well as family doctor contract services. By fully leveraging the complementary advantages of general practice and specialties, public health, and the broader health sector, the center has established a research collaboration network for general practice. It systematically conducts high-quality general practice research and emphasizes the transformation of research results, continuously leading the construction of the general practice discipline and the improvement of primary health care service capabilities in China.

Research Fields and Directions

The General Practice Research Center focuses on cutting-edge scientific issues in general practice. The main research directions include:

- Innovation in diagnosis and treatment models for chronic diseases at the primary care level

- Shared decision-making

- Evaluation and improvement of primary care quality

- Development and application of digital and intelligent health technologies

- Telemedicine and internet-based health services

- Optimization of family doctor service models

- Medical data sharing and application of blockchain technology

Through multidisciplinary cross-transformation, the center embeds cutting-edge technologies into primary care settings, providing technological support for a high-quality and efficient primary health care service system. Adhering to the concept of evidence-based medicine, the center continuously produces consensus, standards, and guidelines for primary care, consolidating the evidence foundation for the development of the discipline.

Recent Key Scientific Research Achievements and Contributions

In the past three years, the General Practice Research Center has undertaken eight horizontal research projects with a total funding of over RMB 6 million. The Department of General Practice at Peking University First Hospital has ranked second in the Fudan University specialty reputation list for three consecutive years.

Professor Chi Chunhua has led the establishment of the “Peking University General Practice Research Network,” the “Chinese General Practice Research Network,” and a special fund. These initiatives have connected more than 500 institutions, continuously amplifying research collaboration and general practice research capabilities. They have also provided ongoing training for general practice research talents and promoted domestic and international research cooperation.

The General Practice Research Center has taken the lead in releasing the 2025 version of the “Expert Consensus on Family Doctor Internet Health Services” and related group standards. It has also contributed to the inclusion of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the national basic public health projects. AI-assisted diagnosis and telemedicine technologies have been implemented in multiple locations, forming a closed loop of “research - standards - policy - application.” This has provided continuous momentum for the upgrading of primary health care service capabilities.
