Peking University Institute of Reproductive and Child Health

Peking University Institute of Reproductive and Child Health (IRCH) was established in 2000, on the basis of the Division of Health Care Epidemiology at the School of Public Health of the formerly Beijing Medical University. The IRCH is affiliated to the School of Public Health of Peking University.

The mission of the IRCH is to improve women and children’s health through conducting perinatal epidemiological research, applied basic research on metabolic and molecular mechanisms, and national and regional big data analysis. Research at IRCH currently focus on policy studies on maternal, reproductive, and child health; the etiology and prevention of birth defects; the etiology and prevention of other common adverse reproductive, pregnancy, and birth outcomes such as infertility, low birth weight, and preterm birth.

The IRCH is part of the national key discipline of epidemiology and biostatistics of China, and the home of the Key Laboratory of Reproductive Health of the National Health Commission of China. The IRCH currently leads two large perinatal cohort studies funded by the National Key R&D Programs of China, and has led several influential projects in the field of perinatal epidemiology, including the China-United States Collaborative Projects on prenatal folic acid & multiple micronutrients supplementation, funded by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and a large mother-child cohort, funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. The key laboratory of IRCH has a modern biobank storing maternal blood, cord blood, placenta, and other types of bio-specimen of several cohorts, and has an advanced experimental platform on the assay of hundreds of environmental pollutants and nutrients.

In recent years, the IRCH has made good progress in elaborating the etiology of birth defects, the epidemiological characteristics of cesarean delivery rates in China, and the impacts of China’s universal two-child policy. In January 2017 and January 2020, the IRCH published two influential studies at JAMA, which provide a comprehensive profile of geographic variations and temporal trends in cesarean delivery rates in China. In 2019, the IRCH completed the first nationwide study on the impacts of China’s two-child policy, which was published at BMJ.
