Medical Isotopes Research Center, Peking University

Medical Isotopes Research Center, Peking University (Health Science Center), was established in 2001. Innovative research and personnel training has always been the goals for Medical Isotope Research Center. With Peking University Health Science Center for more than a hundred years of high-quality medical and biological research base, through multidisciplinary exchange and integration, combined with the center's own conditions, our center conducted systematic researches on nuclear medicine molecular imaging and isotope tracing technology. After more than 10 years of construction, a complete platform for the preparation and evaluation of molecular imaging probes and radiopharmaceuticals from molecular level, cellular level to tissue level, as well as to live animal and clinical translation has been established.

In the recent years, Medical Isotope Research Center has carried out a series of research under the support of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Nature Science Foundation of China. Our research mainly includes the following aspects:

  Translational research of radiopharmaceuticals

  Novel tumor targeting molecular probes

  Tumor therapeutic response monitor

  Tumor targeting radiotherapy

  Multi-functional nanoprobe

Currently, Medical Isotopes Research Center contains 7 faculty members, including 2 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 1 Associate Director Technician and 1 Senior Engineer, and a total of 19 doctoral students and master students. Relying on the above research platform, the members in the lab are actively exploring a series of unique research tasks. The lab has participated in National Key Technology Research and Development Program, “863” projects, Key Science and Technology Project for “Innovative New Drugs”, NSFC General Programs, Key Programs, Key international cooperation projects, Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. In addition, the lab has received 8 China National Invention Patents. Relevant achievements have won Berson-Yalow Award granted by Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging.

Medical Isotopes Research Center have conducted a systematic and fundamental research on integrin αvβ3-targeted probe RGD peptide, and completed the translation from small animal imaging to large animal imaging and then to clinical application. We published a series of research papers on the development of the novel tumor-specific imaging agent 99mTc-3PRGD2, got several related patents, and have successfully translated it into the clinical practice. Clinical studies have confirmed the safety and effectiveness of99mTc-3PRGD2 and we are now applying for the approval of CFDA for its routine clinical use. The clinical applications of 99mTc-3PRGD2 will focus on screening and early detection of tumors, molecular classification in vivo, staging, treatment monitoring, and prognosis evaluation towards personalized medicine. The scientific value is to solve the technical bottleneck problem of multiple tumor detection by SPECT imaging.
