Beijing Key Laboratory of Female Pelvic Floor Disorders

As an innovative platform of female pelvic floor disorders research, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Female Pelvic Floor Disorders is initiated by the Peking University People’s Hospital, focusing on the pathogenesis, individualized evaluation method and new treatment materials of female pelvic floor disorders. The research on pelvic floor disorders has a history of over 10 years in the Peking University People's Hospital. In 2002, the Peking University People’s Hospital was the first to carry out the diagnosis and treatment of female pelvic disorders in China; in 2011, the Center for Pelvic Floor Disorders was established; in 2015, the Peking University People’s Hospital won two achievement awards in the prophylaxis of female pelvic floor disorders; in December 2016, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Female Pelvic Floor Disorders was established; in 2017, the Chinese Female Pelvic Floor Disorders Control Project Quality Control Center was established; and also in 2017, the Peking University Health Science Center Female Pelvic Floor Disorders Research Center was established.

Research interests: mainly focus on female pelvic floor disorders, including pelvic organ prolapse, lower urinary tract symptoms, intestinal dysfunction, perineal pain, sexual dysfunction and so on. We have studied in multiple aspects such as risk factors, pathogenesis, evaluation methods, and individualized treatment. Meanwhile, we have integrated multiple clinical and basic disciplines, including gynecology, urology, gastrointestinal surgery, gastroenterology, pain management, psychiatry & psychology, magnetic resonance imaging center, materials chemistry, and tissue engineering.

Main research directions: 1. Etiological research; 2. Together with MRI and tissue engineering researches, we are dedicated in investigating the pathogenesis of female pelvic floor disorders and the individualized disease evaluation, so as to provide the foundation for precision medicine; 3. We have developed our own intellectual property right of a pelvic floor tissue engineering mesh which makes up the domestic blank. It aims to solve the problems of costs and complications caused by the current meshes. The manufacturing method of this pelvic floor mesh has obtained the national invention patent.

Undertaking the basic study on pelvic floor disorders, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Female Pelvic Floor Disorders has full-time laboratory staff and graduated students to engage in the scientific research. We have a powerful technical team, including 6 doctoral advisors, 2 researchers, and 13 academic committee members. We have well-equipped laboratories with reasonable lay-out and strong scientific research atmosphere.

Taking the cross-merging advantages of multi-disciplines such as material chemistry, tissue engineering, and 3D imaging, our laboratory has developed our own intellectual property right of a pelvic floor tissue engineering mesh and has explored the pathogenesis of pelvic floor disorders.
