Beijing International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Upper Gastrointestinal Cancers
The international cooperation platform for upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancers established at Peking University Cancer Hospital (PKUCH) was certified by Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission as a 2018 Beijing International Cooperation Base (hereinafter referred to as “the Base”). The Base is headed by Prof. Jiafu JI.
The overarching goals of the Base are: to develop new high-risk population identification technology for upper GI cancers, and improve the detection rate and early diagnosis rate of upper GI cancers; to identify early diagnosis and predictive biomarkers, and study the function of related markers; to conduct basic and clinical research into new targeted drugs, and to establish an effective model for upper GI cancer detection and precision treatment. It is a novelinternational cooperation platform co-founded and co-managed by a Scientific Committee and a Management Committee jointly established by PKUCH and its international partners who will work together to apply for and implement research projects and share risks and benefits. The main cooperation model of the Base is to take advantage of advanced international research technology and conduct cooperative studies on high-incidence cancers of Chinaled by Chinese scientists. The Base is also engaged in translation of research findings into clinical practices, so as to improve diagnosis and treatment of gastric and esophageal cancers and benefit the patient in China.
The Base has a Key Laboratory of “Carcinogenesis and Translational Research” certified by Ministry of Education and Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and a internationally recognized dedicated research team of academic competitiveness, several of whom are world-renown leaders in their respective fields. For example, Prof. Jiafu JI was appointed president of International Gastric Cancer Association (IGCA) between 2017 and 2019, Prof. Weicheng YOU and Prof. Kaifeng PAN hold membership of IGCA.
At present, the Base has set up three international strategic cooperation platforms. In 2018, under approval and support of German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Base and its long-term partner Technical University of Munich established a Joint Key Laboratory for upper GI cancers. This is the only one of the eight Sino-Germany collaborative programs approved by BMBF that is specialized in biomedicine. Based on this program, the Base and PKUCH jointly applied for and approved as the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of the Ministry of Science and Technology, P. R. China. The Base has established a Joint Institute with Cardiff University, UK, working toward the goal of cultivating all-around talents good at both clinical practices and research. The Base has also launched the Sino-US Joint Laboratory for cancer immunotherapy committed to exploration of comprehensive immunotherapy for gastric cancer.
The base is in line with the development goals of the National Science and Technology Innovation Center and the key missions of Beijing's scientific and technological innovation. More importantly, this new type of international cooperation model sets a valuable example and provides useful guidance for future cooperation, which will significantly promote improvement of upper GI cancer prevention and treatment in China.
