In 2014, the National Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders (Peking University Sixth Hospital) was identified by Ministry of Science and Technology, National Health and Family Planning Commission and Health Department of PLA General Logistics Department.

With the transformation of medical model and the trends of development in medical science, the institute focuses on the highest prevalence rate and the most harmful mental disorders in China, gradually formed three stable research areas including clinical psychiatry, social psychiatry, and biological psychiatry. The clinical psychiatry focuses on biological diagnosis, individualized drug therapy and psychotherapy; the social psychiatry obtains the epidemiological data of mental disorders and environmental risk factors by using large sample survey; the biological psychiatry investigates the pathogenesis of major mental diseases by the means of multidisciplinary research techniques. To promote the resolution of related clinical problems, researchers in all directions are trying to explore the pathogenesis, diagnosis and novel drug targets of major mental diseases.

The institute established a clinical research team with reasonable age structure and strong innovation ability which includes the Academicians, the National Millions Talent, the chief scientist of Foundation for Innovative Research Groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the State Key Development Program for Basic Research of China (973), the Yangtze river scholars Distinguished Professor, Winners of National Natural Science Foundation of China for Distinguished Young Scholars and Outstanding Young Scholars, the New Century Excellent Talents in University and PhD supervisors as academic leaders, and the Supported Young talent by China Association for Science and Technology, the winner of the Science and Technology Nova Plan and Beijing ten hundred thousand excellent health professionals as key members. The institute covering a total area of 12120 square meters, has established mental disease bio-marker evaluation platform, EEG monitoring system and pathological memory animal model research platform etc. The members take the lead to charge multiple national major Projects including National Key Research and Development Program, State Key Development Program for Basic Research of China (973), National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863), National Science & Technology Pillar Program, and the Foundation for Innovative Research Groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China etc. The members have published a series of research papers in many famous journals including Science, Nat Genet, Lancet, Nat Neurosci, Am J Psychiatry, JAMA Psychiatry, Mol Psychiatry and Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. These published papers had gained many special comments and extensive repetition and citations from international counterparts, which generated important academic influences in the worldwide. The research team won many awards, such as the science and technology progress award of the Ministry of Education, the Beijing prize for science and technology, the Chinese medical science and technology award and so on. During the three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017, the institute won the first position of China's science and technology influence list of psychiatry. The Psychiatry / Psychology of Peking University has entered the first 1% of the global basic scientific index database (ESI), which has become one of the international high level disciplines.

The institute has performed a series of applied basic researches on mental and psychological diseases, which has an important academic influence in the world. The studies on diseases such as schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, autism and addiction achieved fruitful results. For example, the members first reported the elimination of pathological memory by evocation-extinction patterns providing a new direction for the treatment of addiction and other diseases, reported schizophrenia susceptibility genes in Chinese Han population and explored the potential function of these new susceptibility genes, and found the significant association between drug efficacy and brain imaging characteristics affected by genetic factors in ADHD. From 2012 to 2014, the first nationally representative community household survey of mental health in China, China Mental Health Survey (CMHS), was led by the institute in cooperation with more than forty institutions, hospitals and universities. The CMHS provided scientific assessments of the prevalence of major mental disorders, as well as disease burden and the state of mental health service utilization in China.
